The internet went bonkers when the new iPhone 8 and iPhone X were announced on September 12. What drove the ‘net even more crazy was the $999 price tag that was smacked on the new iPhone X. While a $1000 phone seems crazy, Apple CEO Tim Cook thinks the iPhone X is being sold at a “value price.”

Cook sat down with ABC’s Robin Roberts during Good Morning America on Wednesday to talk about the new iPhones. When Roberts asked Cook if the iPhone X price was “out of reach for the average American”, Cook talked about why he feels the price is actually reasonable.

“Well, it’s a value price, actually, for the technology that you’re getting” Cook told Roberts.

The technology Cook is referring to is the iPhone X’s new “all screen” design, “true-depth” camera, facial recognition capability, and augmented reality feature. The phone also features a better camera with 12 megapixels, and all new Animojis. Animojis uses the new facial recognition technology to allow you to mirror your facial expressions onto 12 different Emojis.

Even with the announcement of all these new features, people still question its affordability. Although there is a $999 price tag on the phone, Cook went on to explain that most people actually don’t end up paying the full price for a phone.

“As it turns out, most people are now paying for phones over long periods of time, so very few people will pay the price tag of the phone initially,” Cooks said. “Also, most people actually trade in their current phone and so that reduces the price further, and some carriers even throw in subsidies and discounts.”

It will take a while to determine whether or not the iPhone X was given a “value price” at $999, and the answer may differ depending on who you ask. One thing is for certain, however: these iPhone’s keep getting crazier and crazier!
