El Paisano Shines at SoCal JACC Conference

The El Paisano staff attended the Journalism Association of Community Colleges’ (JACC) Southern California Conference on Oct. 14 at Cal State Fullerton. Placing in on-the-spot and mail-in contests, El Paisano came away with a total of nine awards that Saturday evening.

 

Journalism students from all around southern California flooded into Cal State Fullerton’s student union building to attend workshops, listen to keynote speakers and compete in on-the-spot competitions.

 

The JACC event kicked off with keynote speaker Walter Baranger. Baranger had spent more than 40 years with the New York Times. His speech was the topic of the event’s News Writing and Opinion

 

El Paisano’s Editor-in-Chief, Ramon Alvarado was awarded third place in the News Writing competition while News Editor Noah Garcia’s Opinion piece won first place. Alvarado also picked up an honorable mention in the JACC Critical Review competition.

 

Former editor-in-chief Diego Crespo received a fourth place award in Illustration for one of his pieces of work from last semester.

 

Photographer Aaron Martinez picked up third place in Magazine Cover Design and first place in Student Designed Ad.

 

La Cima, El Paisano’s magazine, was awarded second place in Magazine Design/Layout for their work over the summer. Madelyn Gastelum, Sports Editor for El Paisano, got third place in Magazine Photo Story-Essay for her layout.

 

El Paisano’s online staff came away with a General Excellence award for the Spring 2017 semester.

 

In the end, the JACC SoCal Conference was another successful event for the El Paisano staff. It is the second JACC conference El Paisano received more than eight awards.

 

“What can I say; I feel like a proud mom watching her kids achieve success,” Journalism Advisor Wendy Carrera said.

 

El Paisano will compete in the JACC State Conference in March of next year. They’ll surely be looking to add more awards to their growing collection.
